Chinese Giant salamander
(Andrias species)

I love Chinese giant salamanders because they are fascinating animals that have lived on Earth for millions of years. They may look unusual, but they are gentle, special, and important to our rivers. Sadly, they are in danger of disappearing because their habitats are being damaged. I want to help protect them so that future generations can see these amazing animals too.

The Chinese giant salamander can grow to lengths exceeding 1.8 meters (about 6 feet) and can weigh over 140 pounds. It has a flabby body, broad flat head, and lidless eyes, which give it a distinctive appearance. Its skin is slimy and mud-colored, allowing it to blend into its aquatic environment. This species is often referred to as a "living fossil" due to its long evolutionary history, having existed for over 170 million years.

Project Andrias (a Chinese Giant Salamander Conservation Project)

Project Andrias is an eight-year conservation initiative dedicated to protecting China’s endangered giant salamanders through sustained research, public education, and direct conservation efforts. Beginning in Grade 4 and continuing through Grade 11, the project seeks to deepen scientific understanding, raise public awareness, and contribute meaningfully to the long-term survival of these remarkable species endemic to China.
